Using VietQR Scan & Pay

What is VietQR?

VietQR is a standardised nationwide QR code payment system in Vietnam developed by the National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (NAPAS) that allows users to make cashless payments by scanning a single QR code, regardless of which payment app or provider the merchant uses. It is efficient, secure, and widely accepted in Vietnam and at online e-commerce sites as well. 

VietQR is widely accepted across Vietnam and is used by banks, merchants, and service providers, making it a convenient and familiar payment method for travelers. Payments are fast and can be completed within seconds, while its interoperability allows it to work seamlessly across multiple banks and payment apps in the country. It also offers a secure way to pay, reducing the need to carry cash or share card details, which helps lower the risk of loss, theft or fraud. 

VietQR allows you to make payments effortlessly at a wide range of local merchants across Vietnam, both in-store and on popular e-commerce platforms such as Lazada, simply by scanning a QR code—no local bank account required—enabling a seamless and convenient payment experience. 

Who can use VietQR on moolahPAY?

Moolahgo’s moolahPAY is the first non-bank consumer payment app in Singapore to support VietQR Scan-and-Pay as at the time of this writing. Accepted at more than two million physical merchant locations nationwide in Vietnam, VietQR is now the default QR standard in Vietnam. 

All moolahPAY (version 3.0.0) users can use VietQR Scan-and-Pay while in Vietnam and on Vietnamese e-commerce sites that accept VietQR payments, like Lazada Vietnam. 

How to Use VietQR on moolahPAY?

  1. Download and register
    Download the moolahPAY app from the App Store or Google Play and complete your account setup.
     
  2. VietQR Scan-and-Pay is available to all moolahPAY users, but verified users who have completed full-KYC enjoy higher transaction limits.

    *With the launch of VietQR, verification processing times may take longer. We recommend getting yourself verified well ahead of your trip to Vietnam if you require higher spending limits. 

  3. Top Up
    Add funds to your moolahPAY e-Wallet in Singapore Dollars (SGD). We currently only allow top-up via PayNow as it is fast and free. Please scan the PayNow QR code displayed for the best top-up experience. Do not re-scan top-up codes once used. Watch this video for how to top up your moolahPAY e-Wallet.
  4. Request to pay using VietQR at the cashier or checkout page of e-commerce site. When paying in-person, let the merchant know that you would like to pay by “VietQR”. There are two types of VietQR codes, Static and Dynamic. 
    • Static QR codes are those that are typically printed on a hardcopy placard. Typically, scanning a static QR code requires you to enter the amount to pay manually.
    • Dynamic Viet QR codes are also displayed on an electronic device, with transaction amounts generated by the merchant’s system each time.  

Paying with moolahPAY

  1. Open your moolahPAY app and click on ‘Buy Now’ (the round button at the center bottom of the app home screen). 
  2. Scan the merchant’s VietQR Scan-and-Pay code. 
  3. For Static QR Code, enter the amount to pay. 
  4. Authorise the transaction by either entering your PIN or fingerprint. 
  5. Then simply click ‘Pay’ after checking the amount is correct.

Your transaction is now completed and you will receive a notification in your app. Payment is automatically settled in the local Vietnam Dong (VND) to the merchant.

Do I need to convert my money to VND before I pay?

No. moolahPAY automatically handles real-time currency conversion at the competitive exchange rates that you have come to expect from Moolahgo. Just top up your moolahPAY e-Wallet with SGD, and your payment will be settled in the local VND currency at the point of purchase. 

Where can I use VietQR Scan-and-Pay with moolahPAY?

VietQR is widely accepted at approximately two million merchants across Vietnam where you can see the VietQR logo and QR code, from cafes to retail stores, hotels, transport, and more. 

What are the benefits of using VietQR to pay?

Today, VietQR has become the de-facto mode of receiving payments by more than two million Vietnam merchants from retail outlets and eateries to street vendors and taxis. 

  1. More widely accepted than cards and cash.
    VietQR is accepted at approximately two million merchants in Vietnam. Its ease of use and strong consumer preference have made it ubiquitous, embraced by all types of merchants nationwide.
  2. Limitations of multicurrency cards.
    Cards are less commonly accepted by merchants in Vietnam, particularly among smaller businesses that often impose administrative surcharges on credit card transactions to offset high processing fees. Ironically, these small merchants such as street vendors, food stalls and local shops are often the very places where tourists seek out authentic local experiences. 
  3. Safer and more secure compared to cash and cards.
    VietQR eliminates the need to carry large amounts of cash. Should you lose your debit card, anyone can immediately use it. To pay by VietQR, you will always need to unlock your moolahPAY app with your PIN, after unlocking your phone.
  4. Accepted both online and offline.
    The VietQR Scan-and-Pay feature can be used for both online and in-store transactions.
     

Are there fees for making VietQR payments with moolahPAY?

Currently, there are no fees for using VietQR Scan-and-Pay in moolahPAY. For transparency, Moolahgo will always list all charges clearly on the payment page. 

Some merchants may charge you a small fee to use VietQR to pay in their establishments. The charges vary amongst merchants. These extra charges are not levied nor collected by Moolahgo. 

Can I see my transaction history?

Yes. All VietQR transactions made via moolahPAY will appear in your moolahPAY e-Wallet transaction ‘History’ including the exchange rate used and any applicable fees applied. 

What is the minimum and maximum amounts of each VietQR transaction?

Besides the limits imposed by moolahPAY depending on your account verification, additionally, some merchants may impose their own limits as well. The limits imposed by moolahPAY are subject to change. Any changes in these limits will be shown in the moolahPAY app at the time of VietQR scanning. 

I have encountered issues, what should I do?

1. Unrecognised QR code.

If you see an “Unrecognised QR code” message, it means the code is not in the standard VietQR format and is not supported by moolahPay. Please check with the merchant to ensure they provided you with a valid VietQR code. 

2. After scanning the VietQR code or clicking ‘Pay’, the app just keeps loading or remains idle.  

This could be due to slow internet connection or a temporary system delay. Please check your connection and try again. Ensure that you have a strong data signal on your Wi‑Fi or mobile network. 

DO NOT scan and pay again until you have confirmed that the previous payment has not been successful. 

3. My moolahPAY wallet has been deducted but Merchant claims the funds have not been received. 

If your moolahPAY app shows the transaction as successful and your wallet has been deducted, the payment would have been sent to the merchant’s account. In some cases, the merchant’s system may take some time to update the transaction. Show your payment confirmation to the merchant and ask them to check again.  

If the issue persists, you may contact our support team at support@moolahgo.com or send us a WhatsApp message to +65-88980978 (10am to 6pm SGT daily, except on public holidays). 

If a payment has in fact not been received by the merchant, Moolahgo will process a refund to your wallet after completion of investigations. 

DO NOT make another payment to the merchant until you have confirmed on the status of the original transaction with our customer support. 

4. I have requested a refund from the merchant. How quickly can I receive the funds back into my wallet? 

Refund times depend on the merchant’s processing speed. Once the merchant initiates the refund, funds are typically returned to your moolahPay wallet after approximately 15 business days but may take longer depending on situations. We recommend checking with the merchant to confirm that the refund has been initiated. 

5. I’ve scanned the wrong VietQR code or I’ve made payment to the wrong merchant. What should I do? 

Unfortunately, once a VietQR payment is completed, it cannot be reversed with the moolahPay app. Please contact the merchant directly to request a refund. 

6. I have a dispute with the merchant and would like to claim a refund from the merchant.  

Please contact the merchant directly to discuss your dispute and request a refund. Make sure to provide them with your payment details and any relevant information. 

Will my account be put on a 12-hour cooling-off period when I’m roaming?

No, it will not as long as you only access your moolhPAY app from your regular device, and not from another device.  Using data roaming or e-SIM will not trigger a 12-hour cooling off period on your account. 

My moolahPAY account is now on a 12-hour cooling-off period. What should I do?

Unfortunately, there is nothing we could do to shorten this cooling off period as it is a regulatory requirement. If you need to access your moolahPAY account from another device for your travels, we recommend that you allow sufficient time for the 12-hour cooling-off period to lapse.
